As a blogger, I take pictures weekly. Some images I love and some images, some are just ok and there are some that will never see the light of day. After attending the Reward Style Conference and learning so much, I have wanted to focus more on long term goals and one of them is branding. My profile reads, “I’m a Texas gal with a heart for the city and a soul for the sun”! I love the city and everything it has to offer but my soul can’t thrive without those uv rays and Texas is my home! I’m a little bit country too! When I received these images back, I immediately knew that THIS was it! These are images that speak to exactly who I am! THIS is NEWTEXACALI!! I also thought that this was the perfect time to re-introduce myself to all of you and make this a full circle moment!
Hi again! I’m Nikki, not Nicole! I’ll start from the very beginning. I was born in Seguin, Tx and am the youngest of 2! My sister happens to be a very successful entrepreneur! You can find her here. My parents were divorced when I was two and I was mostly raised by my mom and grandmother. I sometimes traveled to see my dad in Las Vegas during either summer or the Christmas holidays. I was a pretty shy kid. Generally scared of everything from thunder (yes, I said thunder) to talking to people. Seems odd to say now but I relied heavily on my sister to speak for me until I reached high school. I excelled as an athlete. Volleyball was my sport! I lettered as a Freshman, became Team Captain as a Junior and traveled around with my club volleyball team. At that point and time my plans were to go to college on an athletic scholarship and eventually go on to play on the U.S Olympic team. If you’re reading this, then you know that that did not happen. This is where my life takes a sharp turn. My senior year in h.s my mom was fired from her job of almost 20 years, we were evicted from more than one home, cars repossessed, I started skipping school and ultimately had to attend night school just to graduate. Needless to say, those athletic scholarships were no longer a focus. I made it by with grades just good enough to walk the stage. The day after I graduated from high school, my mom and I moved to Houston. To make an extremely long story short, this move shed light on my mother’s drug addiction. Now, was in a new city with 2 absent parents, a sister who is doing the best she can to help me while managing her own life and dreams and zero clue about how to be an adult! I enrolled myself in Texas Southern University, worked two sometimes three jobs and I survived! Fast forward 4 years, I meet my husband. Fast forward another 5 years, I got married and one year later became a mom! Fast forward (with several bumps) 4 more years I had my daughter! During my three years as a stay-at-home mom, I realized that I needed something that was for me! I knew what blogging was. I knew that it looked cool and I figured out that the girls that were doing it were making coins! Right as I started to pull my blog together, my husband got laid off and I had to go back to work. My background is luxury retail management so that’s what I went back to. Trying to work, blog, attend events, travel, and take care of two busy kids quickly became physically overwhelming for me. It landed me in the hospital and at that point I knew something had to give. After less than a year on my job, I quit and became a full-time blogger!
There are so many stories to tell that I didn’t because if I did you’d be reading for hours! I shared all of this so you can get to know me better and as a reminder that each of us has a story. There is no perfect way to do life. I believe that my footsteps are ordered and if I had hadn’t lived through all of the experiences I spoke of, I’d still be that shy girl who is scared of thunder, with nothing to say and no story to tell!
NEWTEXACALI is a representation of every girl! No matter where you come from or where you’re going! When I look at these images, they reinforce that I am well on my way to creating a brand that fully represents who I am and where I’m going! To quote the late great Nipsey Hussle, “stay 10 toes down”! Stay true to you and the rest will fall into place!
Nice to meet you!
